This means that any byte of data can be accessed directly and in roughly the same amount of time, regardless of its physical location. This is in contrast to sequential access memory, where data must be accessed in a specific order, making retrieval of later data much slower.

RAM is considered volatile memory, meaning that its contents are lost when the power supply is turned off. This is why computers require persistent storage, such as hard drives or solid-state drives, to store data and programs long-term. RAM serves as the computer's working memory, holding the operating system, currently running applications, and the data they are actively using. The speed and capacity of RAM significantly impact a computer's overall performance. More RAM allows a computer to handle more tasks simultaneously and run more demanding applications smoothly.

There are several types of RAM, including DRAM (Dynamic Random-Access Memory) and SRAM (Static Random-Access Memory). DRAM is more common and less expensive, requiring periodic refreshing to retain data. SRAM is faster and more expensive, not requiring refreshing, and is often used for cache memory. The technology of RAM continues to evolve, with newer generations offering increased speeds and densities.
