Satellittlaseravstandsmåling, often abbreviated as SLR, is a space geodesy technique used to precisely measure the distance between a ground station and an artificial satellite equipped with a retroreflector. The system works by firing a short laser pulse from the ground station towards the satellite. The retroreflector on the satellite reflects the laser pulse directly back to the originating ground station. Precise timing equipment at the station measures the round-trip travel time of the laser pulse. Knowing the speed of light, the distance to the satellite can be calculated with very high accuracy, typically on the order of millimeters.

These measurements are crucial for various scientific and practical applications. They are fundamental for establishing and maintaining the global geodetic reference frames, which are essential for navigation, mapping, and Earth science research.
