Satellitelike

Satellitelike is an informal, descriptive term used in astronomy and related fields to refer to objects, features, or phenomena that resemble satellites in their relationship to a primary body or in their observational properties, but whose classification as a natural satellite or artificial satellite has not been definitively established.

The word is a blend of satellite and -like and does not denote a formal category in major astronomical catalogs. Because it lacks fixed criteria, its meaning depends on context and the author’s intent, and many situations are better described with established terms such as moon, natural satellite, artificial satellite, or quasi-satellite.

Common usages include describing bodies in orbital configurations that resemble satellites, such as objects in 1:1 resonance that orbit a planet in a satellite-like manner but without clear origin as a moon; temporarily captured bodies or debris that may later escape; or observational impressions of lunar-like dynamics in exoplanetary systems where a body appears to accompany a larger body. It can also be used in space-mission contexts to refer to smaller payloads or secondary objects that behave similarly to satellites.
