Satelliittilähetysten

Satelliittilähetysten is the Finnish term for satellite broadcasting. This technology enables the transmission of signals, typically television or radio, over long distances using artificial satellites orbiting the Earth. Satellites act as relay stations, receiving signals from an uplink station on the ground and retransmitting them to a wider geographical area, known as the downlink coverage.

The process begins with a broadcaster sending their signal to a geostationary satellite. These satellites are positioned in orbit at an altitude of approximately 35,786 kilometers above the Earth's equator, appearing stationary from the ground due to their orbital period matching the Earth's rotation. The satellite amplifies the signal and beams it back down to Earth.

Receiving satellite broadcasts requires a satellite dish, often referred to as a "satellite receiver" or "satellite antenna," and a set-top box or integrated tuner. The dish focuses the weak satellite signal onto a receiver (LNB - Low Noise Block downconverter) which amplifies and converts the signal to a frequency that can be processed by the receiver. Satellite broadcasting is widely used for distributing television channels, radio programming, and increasingly, internet services to areas where terrestrial broadcasting infrastructure is limited or absent. It offers a broad coverage area and can deliver a large number of channels.
