Sassou
Sassou is a nickname and shorthand widely used to refer to Denis Sassou Nguesso, a Congolese politician who has played a central role in the politics of the Republic of the Congo. Born in 1943 in Edou, he rose through the military and the ruling establishment that governed the country under the Congolese Labour Party. He first held the presidency from 1979 to 1992, and after a period outside government, returned to power in 1997 and has remained president since then.
