Sarnamisest

Sarnamisest is a term that refers to the linguistic and cultural identity associated with the Sarnami Hindustani language spoken by the Indo-Caribbean population in Suriname and the Netherlands. This language is a dialect of Bhojpuri, a language spoken in northern India, which was brought to Suriname by indentured laborers from British India in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Over generations, this language evolved in the Surinamese context, absorbing influences from Dutch, Javanese, and other languages spoken in Suriname.

The term "Sarnami" itself is derived from the Sarnami Hindustani word "sarnam," meaning "name" or "identity." Thus, Sarnamisest encompasses not only the language but also the associated cultural practices, traditions, and shared experiences of the Sarnami Hindustani-speaking community. This community, primarily of Hindu faith, has maintained its distinct cultural heritage while integrating into Surinamese and Dutch societies.

In Suriname, Sarnami Hindustani is spoken by a significant portion of the population, particularly within the Indo-Surinamese community. Following the large-scale migration of Surinamese of Indian descent to the Netherlands, especially in the latter half of the 20th century, Sarnamisest has also found a strong presence in the Netherlands.
