Saponiinit
Saponiinit are a diverse group of natural plant glycosides known as saponins. In some languages, including Finnish where the plural is saponiinit, this term denotes these compounds collectively; in English, saponin is the standard term. They consist of a hydrophobic aglycone, called a sapogenin, bound to one or more sugar molecules. This amphipathic structure gives saponiinit surface-active properties, enabling foaming and acting as detergents and emulsifiers in water.
Saponiinit are categorized by their sapogenin skeleton as either steroidal or triterpenoid saponins, with wide variation
They are widespread in plants, particularly in soap-producing species such as soapberries (Sapindus spp.) and soapbark
Safety considerations are important: saponins can irritate mucous membranes and, at high concentrations, disrupt cell membranes,
