Sannolikhetsvärdena

Sannolikhetsvärdena, often translated as probability values or p-values in statistical contexts, are a crucial concept in hypothesis testing. They represent the probability of obtaining test results at least as extreme as the observed results, assuming that the null hypothesis is true. The null hypothesis is a statement of no effect or no difference. A low sannolikhetsvärde suggests that the observed data are unlikely to have occurred by random chance alone if the null hypothesis were true.

When conducting a statistical test, researchers typically set a significance level, often denoted by alpha (α). This alpha level is the threshold for rejecting the null hypothesis. Common values for alpha are 0.05, 0.01, or 0.10. If the calculated sannolikhetsvärde is less than or equal to the chosen significance level (p ≤ α), the null hypothesis is rejected. This indicates that there is statistically significant evidence to suggest that the alternative hypothesis is true.
