Sankeien

Sankeien Garden is a vast Japanese garden located in Naka Ward, Yokohama, Japan. It was founded by Sankei Hara, a wealthy silk trader, who envisioned it as a place for public enjoyment and cultural preservation. Construction began in 1906 and continued for many years, incorporating many historic buildings from across Japan.

The garden spans approximately 17.5 hectares and features a diverse landscape with a central pond, winding paths, and a variety of plant life that changes with the seasons. Hara's collection of historic structures, many of which were relocated from their original sites, adds a unique historical dimension to the garden. These buildings include samurai residences, tea houses, and a famous pagoda, all carefully placed to harmonize with the natural scenery.

Sankeien is divided into two main sections: the Outer Garden and the Inner Garden. The Outer Garden, which Hara opened to the public in 1906, is characterized by its open spaces and the large pond. The Inner Garden, which was completed later and opened in 1958 after Hara's death, showcases more intimate settings and meticulously arranged landscapes.

The garden is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a tranquil escape and a glimpse into Japan's rich architectural and horticultural heritage.
