Sanaag

Sanaag is a region in the Horn of Africa, located in the northeastern part of Somaliland and Somalia. The regional capital is Erigabo (Ceerigaabo). The region has a coastline along the Gulf of Aden and includes coastal towns such as Las Khorey. Sanaag is inhabited mainly by Somali clans, including the Warsangali and Dhulbahante, and has a history linked to the Warsangali Sultanate which historically controlled the northern coastline.

Politically, Sanaag is administered by Somaliland as one of its regions, but the area near its southern and eastern parts has been claimed by Puntland, contributing to ongoing border disputes. Since the early 1990s, the region has been part of the broader effort to establish governance in the post-collapse era of Somalia.

Geography and climate: The terrain is a mix of highland plateaus and coastal plains; climate is arid to semi-arid with seasonal rainfall.

Economy and life: The economy is predominantly pastoralist, based on livestock rearing; fishing is important along the coast, and a small-scale agricultural production occurs in river valleys and oases in some districts. The region has occasional mineral prospecting and potential natural resources, but development is limited by security and infrastructure constraints.
