Samenblasen

Samenblasen (literally “seed bladders”) is a term found in some German-language botany texts to describe seed-containing, bladder-like structures that form during fruit development. The expression is not a single, defined modern botanical category and does not correspond to a specific taxonomic concept. In contemporary usage, more precise terms such as fruit, capsule, schizocarp, seed capsule, or pod are typically used, depending on the species and the precise morphology of the ovary and fruit.

In descriptions where Samenblasen are mentioned, the structure is usually a sac- or bladder-shaped enclosure that contains the seeds. These structures can be dry or fleshy and may persist after seed formation. Their primary functions include protecting seeds and, in some cases, aiding dispersal. Dispersal mechanisms associated with bladder-like fruits can involve buoyancy in water, flotation or wind carriage if the bladder is inflated, or attachment to animals if the interior is opened or exposed.

Because Samenblasen do not denote a single standardized botanical category, their usage is largely historical or descriptive rather than taxonomic. When encountered in modern literature, botanists generally translate the term into more specific concepts such as seed capsule, schizocarp, or dehiscent fruit, depending on how the seeds are produced and released.
