Salsette

Salsette is an island in the northern part of the contact line between the Arabian Sea and the Thane Creek. It is also known as Salsette Island. It is the largest island in the Mumbai Suburban district of Maharashtra, India. The island is home to the cities of Mumbai and Thane. The island is divided into two administrative districts: the Mumbai Suburban district and the Thane district.

The island is believed to have been named after the Old Gujarati word for the number 'six', referring to six original villages that were settled on the island. During the Portuguese rule, the island was known as Sashti. It was then a centre of Portuguese activity in India. The island was eventually ceded to the British East India Company in 1774, as part of the Treaty of Bassein.

Salsette Island is a densely populated area, with a population of over 20 million people.
