Salou

Salou is a municipality in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, located on the Costa Dorada along the Mediterranean Sea. It lies in the comarca of Tarragonès, about 8 kilometers northeast of Tarragona and roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. The local population is around 28,000 residents, with a seasonal increase due to tourism.

The town is a seaside resort known for its beaches, such as Platja de Llevant and Platja de Capellans, and for the long Paseo Jaume I waterfront promenade that runs along the coast. The economy is largely driven by tourism, hospitality and related services. The nearby PortAventura World, one of Spain’s largest theme park complexes, includes PortAventura Park (opened 1995) and Ferrari Land (opened 2016).

History: Salou originated as a fishing village and began to develop as a tourist destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, spurred by improvements in transport and the appeal of the coast. The town has since expanded with hotel corridors and amenities to accommodate visitors.

Transport: Salou is connected by the AP-7 motorway and other roads; it is served by regional rail from Tarragona and bus services to surrounding towns. Reus Airport is the nearest international airport, located a short distance away.
