Sakteng

Sakteng is a remote village located in the Trashigang District of eastern Bhutan. It is situated in a valley in the Himalayas, bordering the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The village is known for its pristine natural beauty, including lush forests, rolling hills, and clear streams. Sakteng is home to the Brokpa people, a semi-nomadic community with a distinct culture and way of life. The Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1999, encompasses the area. This sanctuary is a biodiversity hotspot, home to a variety of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species. The landscape is characterized by alpine meadows, rhododendron forests, and coniferous trees. The Brokpa people have traditionally managed the land sustainably, reflecting a deep respect for nature.

Access to Sakteng is challenging, requiring a multi-day trek or a flight to Yonphula Airport followed by a drive on rough roads. This remoteness has helped preserve its unique cultural heritage and pristine environment. The village offers a glimpse into a traditional Bhutanese lifestyle, far removed from modern development. Sakteng is becoming increasingly recognized for its potential in ecotourism, attracting visitors interested in cultural immersion and natural exploration. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect both the natural and cultural landscape of Sakteng.
