The term combines the Finnish word *sakea* (meaning "strong" or "thick," colloquially referring to alcohol) with the suffix *-ttaminen*, indicating the action of doing something. The practice typically involves a host or group organizing a series of drinks, often starting with lighter beverages like beer or cocktails before progressing to stronger spirits such as vodka, schnapps, or Finnish *viina*.
