Sailplaning

Sailplaning is a term that can refer to two distinct but related concepts within aviation.

The first meaning describes an aircraft that is capable of gliding or soaring without engine power for an extended period. This is often achieved through aerodynamic efficiency, allowing the aircraft to gain altitude by exploiting rising air currents, such as thermals or ridge lift. Gliders are a prime example of aircraft designed for sailplaning in this sense. Some powered aircraft also have the capability to glide for a significant distance after engine failure, allowing for a controlled landing.

The second, less common meaning of sailplaning refers to a specific maneuver or technique used by sailplanes (gliders) to gain altitude or extend their flight. This typically involves a controlled turn or a series of turns, often in a specific area of rising air. The goal is to convert horizontal speed into vertical ascent. This maneuver requires a high degree of skill and understanding of meteorology and aerodynamics to execute effectively. The term might also be used informally to describe the act of simply gliding or soaring in a sailplane.
