Sahihayn

Sahihayn refers to the two most authentic collections of hadith in Sunni Islam: Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. These compilations are considered the pinnacle of hadith literature and are revered by Sunni Muslims for their rigorous methodology and accuracy in preserving the sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad.

Sahih al-Bukhari was compiled by Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari over a period of sixteen years. He reportedly examined over 600,000 hadith and selected around 7,275, which he deemed to be the most authentic. His criteria for authenticity were exceptionally strict, focusing on the unbroken chain of narrators (isnad) and the reliability and piety of each narrator.

Sahih Muslim was compiled by Imam Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj. He also followed stringent criteria for selecting hadith and is said to have reviewed a vast number of narrations to compile his collection. Sahih Muslim contains fewer hadith than Sahih al-Bukhari, with around 7,500 hadith, including repetitions.

The Sahihayn are not merely historical documents but are considered authoritative sources of Islamic law, theology, and practice. They are studied extensively by scholars and lay Muslims alike, forming a cornerstone of Islamic tradition and guidance. Their acceptance by the vast majority of Sunni Muslims highlights their profound significance in the transmission of the Sunnah.
