It is an essential tool in the woodworking and furniture-making industries, as the moisture content of wood significantly affects its properties, such as strength, stability, and workability.

Electrical resistance meters work by measuring the electrical resistance of the wood, which changes with moisture content. The moisture content of wood is typically expressed as a percentage of the wood's dry weight. For example, if a piece of wood weighs 100 grams when completely dry and 110 grams when fully saturated, its moisture content is 10%. Different types of wood and applications have specific moisture content requirements. For instance, wood used in construction should have a moisture content of around 12-15%, while wood used in musical instruments should be as dry as possible, ideally below 5%.
