Saastelähteistä (sources of pollution) refers to the origins or points from which pollutants are released into the environment. These sources can be broadly categorized into two main types: point sources and non-point sources.

Point sources are identifiable, discrete locations from which pollutants are discharged. Examples include industrial discharge pipes from factories, sewage treatment plants, and oil spills from tankers. The location and nature of the pollution are generally known, making it easier to monitor and regulate.

Non-point sources, also known as diffuse sources, are more widespread and difficult to pinpoint. They involve pollutants that are carried or washed into the environment over a large area, often by rainfall or snowmelt. Examples include agricultural runoff containing fertilizers and pesticides, urban stormwater runoff carrying oil, grease, and litter from streets, and atmospheric deposition of pollutants from the air.

Identifying and understanding saastelähteistä is crucial for developing effective strategies to control pollution and protect environmental quality. Different types of pollution, such as water pollution, air pollution, and soil contamination, have distinct sources.
