SWESS

SWESS, or the South West England Seismic Survey, is a collaborative project between the British Geological Survey (BGS) and the University of Bristol. The primary objective of SWESS is to investigate the seismic activity and geological structure of the South West England region. This area is of particular interest due to its historical seismic events and the potential for future earthquakes.

The project involves the deployment of a dense network of seismic sensors across the region. These sensors are used to record ground motions and seismic waves generated by both natural and anthropogenic sources. The data collected is analyzed to create detailed seismic hazard maps and to better understand the subsurface geology.

SWESS also aims to improve the understanding of induced seismicity, which is seismic activity triggered by human activities such as mining, reservoir impoundment, and fluid injection. By studying these induced events, the project contributes to the development of guidelines for mitigating seismic risk associated with industrial activities.

The findings from SWESS are expected to enhance the resilience of infrastructure and communities in the South West England region. The project's results are shared with local authorities, emergency services, and the public to promote informed decision-making and preparedness for seismic events.
