SSRIlääkkeet, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, are a class of antidepressant medications commonly prescribed to treat depression and other mental health conditions. They work by increasing the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter, in the brain. Serotonin plays a role in mood regulation, sleep, and appetite. By blocking the reabsorption, or reuptake, of serotonin into nerve cells, SSRIs allow more serotonin to be available in the synaptic cleft, which is the space between nerve cells. This increased availability of serotonin is believed to help improve communication between nerve cells and regulate mood.
