SNAREs are a large family of proteins found in eukaryotic cells that play a crucial role in membrane fusion events, such as the transport of vesicles within the cell and the release of neurotransmitters. The term SNAREvälitteinen essentially describes the mechanism by which SNAREs bring together two membranes, allowing them to fuse and exchange their contents.

There are two main types of SNAREs: v-SNAREs (vesicle SNAREs) and t-SNAREs (target SNAREs). V-SNAREs are typically found on the surface of transport vesicles, while t-SNAREs are located on the target membrane. When a vesicle needs to deliver its cargo to a specific location, its v-SNAREs interact with the t-SNAREs on the target membrane. This interaction forms a stable complex that pulls the two membranes into close proximity, overcoming the repulsive forces between them.

The formation of the SNARE complex is a highly specific process, ensuring that vesicles fuse only with their intended targets. This specificity is essential for maintaining the organization and function of cellular compartments. Once the membranes are fused, the vesicle contents are released into the target compartment, or the vesicle membrane becomes integrated into the target membrane. The SNARE complex is then disassembled, allowing the SNARE proteins to be recycled for further rounds of membrane fusion. This SNARE-mediated fusion is fundamental to numerous cellular processes, including endocytosis, exocytosis, and the maintenance of organelle identity.
