SLIP0044

SLIP0044, formally known as BIP44-compatible slip44, is a standard for deriving Hierarchical Deterministic (HD) wallets. It proposes a specific structure for deriving the coin type index within the BIP44 path. This index is crucial for distinguishing between different cryptocurrencies when using a single seed phrase.

The standard defines a hierarchical path structure that looks like m/purpose'/coin_type'/account'/change/address_index. The 'coin_type' field is where SLIP0044 specifies its recommendations. It reserves ranges of numbers for different cryptocurrency categories and individual coins. For instance, it assigns specific numbers to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other well-known cryptocurrencies, as well as to testnets and experimental coins.

The primary goal of SLIP0044 is to ensure interoperability and prevent potential conflicts. By standardizing the coin type index, wallets that adhere to SLIP0044 can correctly derive the correct address for a specific cryptocurrency from a given seed phrase, even if the wallet software itself is different. This standardization helps users manage multiple assets more easily and securely. The list of coin types is maintained and updated by the Slip44 community to accommodate new cryptocurrencies.
