SF6 has a very high global warming potential and a long atmospheric lifetime, prompting regulatory measures to reduce emissions, mandate gas recovery, and promote SF6-free alternatives. Industry efforts focus on recycling, leakage prevention, and the development of insulating technologies that use dry air, nitrogen, or fluorinated ether-based substitutes.

Handling and safety practices emphasize proper sealing, regular inspection, and trained personnel. While SF6 itself is non-toxic and non-flammable under standard conditions, it can act as an asphyxiant in enclosed spaces, making adequate ventilation and monitoring essential.
