SD70M

The EMD SD70M is a six-axle, 4,300 horsepower (3,200 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Diesel. It is the second most powerful model of the SD70 series, preceded by the SD70MAC. The SD70M features a carbody designed for improved visibility, with a large, wrap-around windshield. It is equipped with a 16-710G3B diesel engine and an AC traction system, providing excellent tractive effort and adhesion.

Production of the SD70M began in 1994 and continued until 2004, with over 1,500 units manufactured. These locomotives were primarily used in North America by various Class I railroads, including Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, and CSX Transportation. They are commonly found in freight service, including hauling heavy trains over long distances. The SD70M has a reputation for reliability and fuel efficiency.

Over its production run, several design variations were introduced, including updated electronics and cab features. While newer models like the SD70ACe have since been developed, the SD70M remains a significant and widely operated locomotive in North American railroading. Its robust construction and powerful performance have ensured its continued service for many years.
