Süüdeküünal, commonly known as a spark plug, is a device used in internal combustion engines to ignite the air-fuel mixture. It is connected to the ignition system and generates an electric spark at the correct time to initiate combustion. The spark plug consists of a metal shell, an insulator, and an electrode. The electrical current from the ignition coil travels through the center electrode, across a small gap, to the side electrode, creating a spark.

The gap between the electrodes is crucial for proper spark generation and is typically set within a specific range determined by the engine manufacturer. Over time, the electrodes of a spark plug can wear down, leading to a wider gap and a weaker spark, which can affect engine performance and fuel efficiency. Factors such as engine type, fuel quality, and driving conditions can influence the lifespan of a spark plug.

Different types of spark plugs exist, including those made from copper, platinum, and iridium. Each material offers varying levels of durability and performance. Copper core spark plugs are generally the least expensive and have a shorter lifespan, while platinum and iridium plugs are more durable and can last much longer, providing a more consistent spark. Regular inspection and replacement of spark plugs are an important part of engine maintenance to ensure optimal operation.
