Säteilyhäviöt, or radiative losses, refer to the energy that a system emits as radiation rather than converting it into useful work or maintaining it as internal energy. In the context of thermodynamics, radiant heat transfer can be significant in high‑temperature systems such as furnaces, combustion chambers, and molten salts. The amount of heat radiated is described by the Stefan–Boltzmann law, where the power emitted is proportional to the fourth power of temperature and the emissivity of the material’s surface. Materials with low emissivity coatings can therefore reduce radiative heat loss.

In electrical engineering, radiative losses appear in high‑frequency circuits, antennas, and power electronics. Radiators and heat sinks are designed to dissipate excess electromagnetic energy, while in radiofrequency transmission the efficiency of an antenna is limited by its radiation resistance. Likewise, in laser physics, spontaneous emission represents a fundamental radiative loss that limits the efficiency of light amplification.

Within nuclear reactors, radiative losses occur in the reactor core and containment structures due to neutron and gamma radiation. Shielding and heat exchangers reduce the transfer of this radiation to surrounding components and ultimately to the environment. In semiconductor devices such as LEDs, the internally generated photons that escape the junction instead of being absorbed represent radiative losses, directly affecting the external quantum efficiency.

Mitigation strategies include the use of high‑reflectivity coatings, thermal insulation, radiation‑hard materials, and active cooling systems. Understanding and managing saeteilyhäviöt is essential for improving energy efficiency in industrial processes, increasing the reliability of electronic devices, and ensuring safety in nuclear facilities.
