Säkerhetsstyrsystem

A säkerhetsstyrsystem, or safety instrumented system (SIS), is a critical component in industrial process control and automation. It is an independent protection layer designed to prevent or mitigate hazardous events that could lead to severe consequences such as injury, environmental damage, or equipment loss. The primary function of a säkerhetsstyrsystem is to take the process to a safe state when predetermined conditions are violated, ensuring the safety of personnel, the environment, and the plant.

The system typically consists of sensors, logic solvers, and final control elements. Sensors monitor critical process parameters such as temperature, pressure, flow, and level. The logic solver, often a programmable logic controller (PLC) or a dedicated safety controller, processes the input signals from the sensors and makes decisions based on predefined safety logic. If a hazardous condition is detected, the logic solver activates the final control elements, which could include valves, switches, or other devices, to bring the process to a safe state.

Säkerhetsstyrsystem is governed by international standards such as IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, which provide guidelines for the design, implementation, and maintenance of these systems. These standards emphasize the importance of a systematic approach to safety, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and the determination of safety integrity levels (SILs). SILs are a measure of the reliability and performance of the safety functions, ranging from SIL 1 (lowest) to SIL 4 (highest).

Regular testing, inspection, and maintenance are essential to ensure the ongoing effectiveness of a säkerhetsstyrsystem. This includes functional testing to verify that the system responds correctly to safety demands, as well as diagnostic testing to identify and address any potential faults.
