In insulators, electrons are tightly bound to atoms, making them immobile and thus preventing significant current passage. When a high voltage is applied, the insulating material can break down, allowing a current to flow, which can be a dangerous or destructive event.

Insulators are widely used in electrical wiring to cover conductive wires, preventing short circuits and electric shocks. They are also found in components like capacitors, where they separate conductive plates, and in high-voltage equipment to isolate energized parts from their surroundings.
