Different tissues absorb X-rays to varying degrees, creating a contrast that allows for visualization of internal structures. Dense tissues like bone absorb more X-rays and appear white on the radiograph, while less dense tissues like soft tissues appear in shades of gray, and air-filled spaces like the lungs appear black.

Radiographic findings can indicate a wide range of medical conditions. For example, in bone imaging, fractures, dislocations, and degenerative changes like osteoarthritis are common findings. In chest X-rays, abnormalities such as pneumonia, lung nodules, pleural effusions, or pneumothorax can be detected. Abdominal X-rays might reveal bowel obstructions, kidney stones, or foreign bodies.
