Räystäskourujen

Räystäskourut, often translated as gutters or rainwater systems, are an essential component of most buildings, particularly in regions with significant rainfall or snowmelt. Their primary function is to collect and direct rainwater and melting snow away from the building's foundation. This prevents water damage, which can lead to serious structural issues over time, including rot, mold, and erosion of the soil around the foundation.

These systems typically consist of horizontal channels installed along the eaves of a roof. They are usually made of durable materials such as galvanized steel, aluminum, copper, or uPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) to withstand various weather conditions. The channels are sloped slightly towards downspouts. Downspouts are vertical pipes that carry the collected water from the gutters down to ground level. From there, the water is directed away from the building through extensions, underground drain pipes, or splash blocks, ensuring it doesn't pool near the foundation.

Proper installation and regular maintenance of räystäskourut are crucial. Clogged gutters, often caused by fallen leaves, debris, or ice, can lead to water overflowing, negating their protective purpose and potentially causing damage to the roof edge and fascia. Cleaning them periodically, especially in autumn after leaves have fallen, helps maintain their functionality and longevity. In areas with heavy snowfall, ice dams can form in gutters, which also require attention to prevent water intrusion into the building.
