Räntebeslut refers to a central bank’s decision regarding its key policy rate, which in turn shapes short-term interest rates, lending costs, and the overall inflation path of an economy. The term is commonly used in Swedish contexts but describes a standard instrument in monetary policy worldwide.

The decision is made at scheduled monetary policy meetings, where officials review a range of economic indicators such as inflation, growth, employment, financial stability, and currency developments. The outcome can be a rate increase, a rate decrease, or a decision to hold the policy rate steady. After the meeting, the central bank typically issues a policy statement and may hold a press conference or publish minutes to explain the reasoning and the foreseen path of rates (forward guidance).

The main instrument involved is the policy rate itself, sometimes called the repo rate or deposit rate, depending on the jurisdiction. Changes influence interbank borrowing costs and, with some lag, consumer and business lending rates, mortgages, and the exchange rate. The transmission mechanism means that the effects on inflation and activity occur over weeks to years.
