Ryukyukedjan

Ryukyukedjan is a cultural organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Ryukyuan performing arts, with a focus on traditional Okinawan dance and music. It operates as a federation of regional groups and schools within the Ryukyu Islands and in diaspora communities, coordinating repertoires, training, and public performances.

Activities include public concerts, dance workshops, music seminars, and school outreach programs designed to educate audiences about Ryukyuan heritage. The group also maintains archives of dances, songs, and accompanying rhythms, and develops instructional materials for teachers and instructors. Through tours and festival appearances, Ryukyukedjan seeks to raise awareness of Okinawan culture and to support contemporary artists working within Ryukyuan traditions.

Repertoire spans traditional Okinawan dance forms and contemporary compositions inspired by Ryukyuan motifs. Traditional instrumentation such as the sanshin, a three-stringed lute, and percussion ensembles featuring taiko and other drums are commonly used in performances, while choreographies blend established steps with innovative movement.

Organizationally, Ryukyukedjan is led by a managing board and artistic directors who collaborate with local chapters. It receives support from cultural institutions, sponsors, and educational partners, and engages in research, documentation, and exchange programs intended to preserve and transmit Ryukyuan performing arts to future generations.
