Rusistics

Rusistics is the academic field dedicated to the study of Russia, its history, culture, language, literature, and society. The term originates from the Latin *Russicus*, meaning "of or pertaining to Russia," and combines elements of Russian studies with broader interdisciplinary approaches. The discipline encompasses a wide range of subjects, including Slavic linguistics, Russian literature, political science, economics, and ethnography, making it a multidisciplinary area of research.

The study of Russian language, or Slavistics, is a core component of Rusistics. Russian, a Slavic language, is spoken by over 260 million people worldwide, primarily in Russia and neighboring countries. Linguistic research focuses on phonetics, morphology, syntax, and historical development, as well as dialectology and sociolinguistics. Literature and cultural studies examine Russian authors such as Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Anna Akhmatova, exploring themes of identity, philosophy, and societal change.

Historical Rusistics investigates Russia’s past, from its medieval origins in Kievan Rus’ to the Soviet era and modern federal state.
