Ruokaympäristö, or the food environment, refers to the surroundings and conditions that influence the availability, affordability, accessibility, and appeal of food and thereby shape people’s dietary choices. It encompasses physical settings such as stores, schools, workplaces, and homes; economic factors like food prices and subsidies; policy and regulatory aspects including labeling, school meal standards, and marketing restrictions; social and cultural influences such as norms, traditions, and media messaging; and digital environments including online grocery services and food delivery platforms.

Researchers study ruokaympäristö to understand how these factors contribute to diet quality, nutrient intake, and health outcomes such as obesity and chronic diseases. It is measured through audits of retail and school food environments, price and availability analyses, marketing exposure assessments, and surveys of consumer perceptions and behaviors. Interventions to improve the ruokaympäristö aim to increase healthy options and reduce barriers, for example by ensuring healthier foods are available and affordable in schools and workplaces, adjusting price signals, restricting or guiding marketing of unhealthy foods, improving nutrition labeling, and designing user-friendly online platforms and vending machines.

In Finland, ruokaympäristö is a consideration in public health and nutrition policy, aligning with national dietary guidelines and initiatives that promote healthier eating patterns and reduce disparities in access to nutritious foods. The concept underscores the need for coordinated actions across sectors—retail, education, work, transport, and digital services—to support healthier eating habits.
