Rundprägungen
Rundprägungen, a German term, translates to "round mintings" or "circular mintings" in English. In numismatics, it refers to coins or medals that are circular in shape, which is the most common form for such items. The term distinguishes these items from other shapes such as square, oval, or irregular punchings. Historically, most coinage has adopted a round form due to the ease of production through methods like striking and the efficiency of handling and storage. The circular design allows for even distribution of metal and a consistent striking surface. While the vast majority of coins are Rundprägungen, the term can also be applied to medals, tokens, or other stamped metal discs. The process of creating a Rundprägung typically involves pressing a blank metal disc into a die that contains the design. The consistent shape is advantageous for automated minting processes and for use in vending machines or coin counters. Therefore, Rundprägungen represent the standard and most prevalent form of minted objects throughout history and in contemporary times.
