The term originates in an imagined Rtüü language, where it denotes a communal or social form of life. There is no real-world taxonomic recognition of Rtüübid, and they are used primarily within fictional worlds and hypothetical discourse.

In the literature, Rtüübid are depicted as small aquatic invertebrates, typically 4–8 millimeters long, with a flattened carapace and a segmented abdomen. They possess paired antennae and a series of luminescent organs along the cephalothorax, producing blue to violet bioluminescence. They inhabit brackish and freshwater coastal lagoons in a northern archipelago, often forming dense colonies on submerged vegetation and rocky substrates. Bioluminescence is used for mating signals, territorial displays, and colony coordination.

Their ecology centers on a mixed diet of microalgae, detritus, and small zooplankton. They are described as gregarious filter- and detritus-feeders that rely on synchronized flashing patterns to communicate within colonies.
