Rozsdásodását, more commonly known as rusting, is a natural oxidation process that affects iron and its alloys, such as steel. It occurs when iron is exposed to both oxygen and moisture, leading to the formation of iron oxides, which we recognize as rust. This process weakens the metal and can compromise its structural integrity.

The chemical reaction involved is an electrochemical process. Iron atoms lose electrons and become positively charged ions. These electrons are then transferred to oxygen atoms in the presence of water, forming hydroxide ions. The iron ions then react with the hydroxide ions and oxygen to create various iron oxides and hydroxides, collectively known as rust. The rate of rusting can be influenced by several factors, including the concentration of electrolytes in the water, temperature, and the presence of impurities in the iron. Saltwater, for example, accelerates rusting significantly due to the presence of dissolved ions that facilitate the electrochemical reactions.

Preventing rozsdásodását is crucial for extending the lifespan of iron-based objects. Common methods of prevention include applying protective coatings like paint, oil, or specialized anti-rust treatments. Galvanization, which involves coating iron or steel with a layer of zinc, is another effective method. The zinc acts as a sacrificial anode, corroding preferentially to the iron, thus protecting it. Alloying iron with other metals, such as chromium to create stainless steel, also significantly enhances its resistance to rusting.
