Rotherbaum

Rotherbaum, sometimes spelled Rothenbaum in German sources, is a quarter (Stadtteil) of Hamburg, Germany. It lies just west of the city center along the northern shore of the Inner Alster and forms part of the city’s central area. The name derives from the Rothenbaum area surrounding the Rothenbaumchaussee, a major street that passes through the neighborhood.

Historically a residential enclave for Hamburg’s upper middle class, Rotherbaum developed in the 19th century with late 19th‑century villas and broad avenues. In the 20th century it underwent changes with urban infill and the growth of educational and commercial facilities, while retaining parks and a walkable, tree-lined character.

Landmarks and features: The quarter includes the Am Rothenbaum stadium (Rothenbaum Tennis Center), a long‑standing venue for Hamburg’s major tennis events. The Rothenbaumchaussee remains a principal axis with shops, cafes, and public buildings, and the area sits near water and green spaces linked to the Alster system.

Transport: Rotherbaum is served by Hamburg’s public transport network, with bus lines along Rothenbaumchaussee and nearby rail access at Dammtor. The neighborhood connects to the inner city and to the broader metropolitan area via major roads and rail.

Education and culture: The quarter hosts a range of educational facilities and research centers associated with Hamburg’s universities, as well as cultural venues and spaces for exhibitions and community events.
