Rotationspressen

Rotationspressen, also known as rotary presses or rotary printing presses, are a type of high-speed printing press that uses cylindrical printing plates to transfer ink to paper or other substrates. Unlike flatbed presses, which use a flat plate, rotary presses employ curved plates that are mounted onto rotating cylinders. This continuous rotation allows for a much faster printing process, making them ideal for mass production of printed materials.

The basic principle involves at least two cylinders: an impression cylinder and a printing cylinder. The printing cylinder holds the plate that has the image to be printed. Ink is applied to this plate, and as the cylinder rotates, it presses the inked plate against the substrate, which is fed between it and the impression cylinder. The impression cylinder provides the necessary pressure to transfer the ink from the plate to the substrate. In many modern rotary presses, multiple printing units are arranged in a stack or in a line, allowing for printing on both sides of the substrate simultaneously and the application of multiple colors in a single pass.

Rotary presses are widely used for printing newspapers, magazines, books, packaging, and other high-volume printed products. Their efficiency and speed have made them indispensable in the modern printing industry. Different types of rotary presses exist, including web-fed presses, which print on a continuous roll of paper, and sheet-fed rotary presses, which print on individual sheets. The development of rotary presses was a significant innovation in printing technology, contributing greatly to the dissemination of information and culture.
