Rotasjonsnivåene, or rotational levels, refer to the discrete energy states a molecule can possess due to its rotational motion. In quantum mechanics, molecules cannot rotate with any arbitrary speed; instead, their rotational energy is quantized, meaning it can only exist at specific, allowed levels. These levels are determined by the molecule's moment of inertia and its angular momentum.

The rotational energy levels of a linear or diatomic molecule are typically described by the rotational quantum number J, which can take integer values starting from 0. The energy of each level is proportional to J(J+1), where J is the rotational quantum number. As J increases, the rotational energy of the molecule increases, and so does the speed of its rotation. Transitions between these rotational levels can occur when a molecule absorbs or emits electromagnetic radiation, typically in the microwave or far-infrared regions of the spectrum. The frequencies of these absorbed or emitted photons correspond to the energy difference between the rotational levels.

For more complex molecules like symmetric tops, spherical tops, or asymmetric tops, the description of rotational levels becomes more intricate, involving additional quantum numbers to fully characterize the rotational states. Nevertheless, the fundamental principle of quantized rotational energy remains the same. Studying rotational spectra, which are the patterns of absorbed or emitted radiation due to transitions between these levels, provides valuable information about a molecule's structure, such as its bond lengths and bond angles, as well as its moment of inertia. This spectroscopic technique is crucial in fields like astrochemistry, atmospheric science, and physical chemistry for identifying and characterizing molecules.
