Rolwaling

Rolwaling is a mountain massif located in the Rwenzori Range of north‑western Uganda and adjoining the western slopes of the Ethiopian Highlands. It rises to an elevation of approximately 4,650 meters (15,260 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest peaks in the region. The mountain is situated near the town of Rwenzori and lies on the border of Uganda’s Kigezi District with the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.

The Rolwaling massif is renowned for its steep, rugged terrain and glaciated features. The summit area hosts a network of small glaciers and permanent snowfields that feed into nearby rivers and streams, playing an important role in the local hydrology. Surrounding the peak are dense montane forests, birch scrub, and alpine meadows that support a diverse array of flora and fauna, some of which are endemic to the Rwenzori ecosystem.

The mountain has gained recognition among trekkers and mountaineers for its challenging routes. The most common ascent path begins at the village of Marialua and follows a series of ridges that involve snowfields, scree slopes, and high‑altitude navigation. Climbers usually require a permit from Uganda’s Ministry of Environment, and the ascent often takes two to three days, depending on weather conditions and technical difficulty.

Local communities traditionally use the foothills for grazing, while the higher elevations remain largely undisturbed, preserving the ecological integrity of the mountain environment. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation for the Rwenzori Mountains, Rolwaling contributes to the area’s significance for conservation and sustainable tourism.
