RollingFileAppender

RollingFileAppender is a log appender used in many logging frameworks to write log events to a file and to rotate the active file when certain conditions are met. When rotation occurs, the current log file is closed and archived according to a naming pattern, and a new file is created for subsequent entries. This mechanism helps manage disk usage and keeps log history organized.

Rotation is controlled by a rolling policy and a triggering policy. A triggering policy decides when to roll over, typically based on the size of the active file or a time boundary. A rolling policy determines how the archived files are named and retained, including whether old files are compressed and how many files or how much total space to keep. Implementations often support compression of rolled files (for example, gzip) and configurable retention strategies.

Configuration typically includes the path of the active log file, a pattern for archived files, and the policies governing rotation. Options usually allow compression of archived files and retention controls such as a maximum number of backups or a maximum total size.
