Rohtang

Rohtang Pass, also known as Rohtang La, is a high mountain pass in the Pir Panjal range of the Indian Himalayas, located in Himachal Pradesh. It sits at an elevation of about 3,978 meters (13,050 feet) above sea level and is roughly 51 kilometers (32 miles) north of Manali. The pass lies on the Manali-Leh highway, connecting the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys.

Geographically, Rohtang Pass serves as a crucial link between the lower valleys of Kullu and the high-altitude regions of Lahaul and Spiti. It acts as a gateway for travelers heading toward remote parts of northern Himachal Pradesh and beyond, and it is a popular destination in its own right for visitors seeking alpine scenery.

Seasonal accessibility is a defining feature of Rohtang Pass. The route is typically closed in winter due to heavy snowfall, with the road usually reopening in late spring or early summer. Weather conditions, avalanches, and landslides can cause temporary closures and disruptions.

In recent years, an all-weather alternative has been developed: the Atal Rohtang Tunnel runs beneath the pass, providing year-round connectivity between Manali and the Lahaul region and reducing travel time and reliance on the surface route.

Access to the Rohtang region is regulated to manage congestion and environmental impact. Traffic is subject to entry permits or seasonal restrictions, and private vehicles may require permits or be subjected to scheduled entry and tolls during peak periods.

The area is a well-known tourist destination for its panoramic high-altitude landscapes, snow experiences, and as a base for exploring Lahaul and Spiti. It also holds strategic significance as part of the broader regional transport network.
