Rohrläufe

Rohrläufe, commonly translated as barrel linings or rifling, refers to the interior surface of a firearm's barrel. In firearms, the rifling consists of a spiral groove cut into the bore of the barrel. This groove imparts a spin to the projectile as it travels down the barrel, a process known as rifling. The spin stabilizes the projectile in flight, significantly improving its accuracy and range compared to an unrifled or smoothbore barrel.

The number of grooves, their depth, and their pitch (the rate at which they twist) vary depending on the firearm's caliber and intended use. For instance, handguns and rifles designed for long-range shooting typically have a faster twist rate to stabilize heavier or longer projectiles. The material of the rifling is usually hardened steel, designed to withstand the immense pressure and friction generated during firing. Over time, the rifling can wear down due to repeated firing, which can affect the accuracy of the firearm. Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential to preserve the integrity of the rohrläufe.
