Rockwellhardheid is a method used to measure the indentation hardness of materials. It is one of the most widely used hardness tests due to its simplicity and speed. The test works by indenting the material with a specific indenter under a known load. The depth of the indentation is then measured, and this depth is used to calculate the Rockwell hardness number.

There are several Rockwell hardness scales, each using a different combination of indenter and load. The most common indenters are a diamond cone and a steel ball of varying diameters. The applied load can range from 15 kgf to 150 kgf. The specific scale used is denoted by a letter, such as HRC for the diamond cone with a major load of 150 kgf, or HRB for a 1/16 inch steel ball with a major load of 100 kgf.

The Rockwell hardness number is inversely related to the depth of indentation. A shallower indentation results in a higher hardness number. This is why the scales are typically reported with a number followed by a letter indicating the scale used, for example, 60 HRC. The test is commonly used for metals, but can also be applied to ceramics and plastics. It is a valuable tool for quality control, material selection, and failure analysis.
