Rockului

Rockului is an annual Romanian music festival that focuses on rock and related alternative genres. Established in 2005 in Bucharest, the event was created to provide a platform for both emerging local bands and internationally recognized acts, aiming to foster a vibrant rock scene within the country. The name derives from the Romanian genitive form of “rock,” reflecting the festival’s dedication to the genre’s cultural influence.

The inaugural edition featured a modest lineup of five Romanian groups and attracted approximately 2,000 attendees. Over subsequent years, the festival expanded its programming, incorporating subgenres such as punk, metal, and indie rock, and increasing its capacity to accommodate up to 30,000 spectators. Notable international performers have included Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, and The Strokes, while Romanian acts such as Cargo, Vama, and Sarmalele Reci have gained broader exposure through their appearances.

Rockului is organized by the nonprofit cultural association SoundWave Romania and is supported by municipal authorities, private sponsors, and music industry partners. In addition to live performances, the festival offers workshops, panel discussions, and networking opportunities for musicians, producers, and media professionals. Environmental sustainability initiatives—such as waste reduction, recycling stations, and promotion of public transport—have been integrated into the event’s logistical planning since 2016.

Critics have praised Rockului for its role in diversifying the Romanian live‑music calendar and for encouraging collaboration between domestic and foreign artists. However, some commentators have noted challenges related to funding stability and venue availability. Despite these issues, the festival remains a significant cultural fixture, contributing to the development of Romania’s contemporary rock landscape and attracting tourists interested in the country’s musical heritage.
