Ristivirtalämmönvaihdin is a type of heat exchanger where the two fluid streams flow in directions perpendicular to each other. This design is common in applications where space is limited and a compact solution is desired. In a cross-flow heat exchanger, one fluid typically flows through a series of tubes or channels, while the other fluid flows over these tubes or channels, perpendicular to the direction of the first fluid.

The primary advantage of a cross-flow heat exchanger is its compact size and relatively simple construction. This makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, including automotive radiators, air conditioning units, and various industrial processes. The effectiveness of a cross-flow heat exchanger depends on factors such as the surface area for heat transfer, the flow rates of the fluids, and their specific heat capacities.

There are different configurations of cross-flow heat exchangers. In a "single-pass" cross-flow design, each fluid makes only one pass through the exchanger. In a "multi-pass" design, one or both fluids may be directed to make multiple passes, increasing the heat transfer efficiency but also the complexity and pressure drop. The performance can be further optimized by considering whether the flow is mixed or unmixed. For instance, in a car radiator, engine coolant flows through tubes, and air is blown across the outside of these tubes. The air flow is generally considered unmixed, while the coolant flow within the tubes can be considered mixed or unmixed depending on the design.
