Ristirytmit
Ristirytmit is a Finnish term that translates to "cross rhythms" in English. It refers to the musical technique of superimposing two or more rhythmic patterns that are in conflict with each other, creating a sense of tension and rhythmic complexity. This is typically achieved by grouping beats in a way that differs from the underlying meter. For example, a common form of ristirytmit involves playing a pattern of three beats against a background of two beats (a 3:2 or hemiola effect), or a pattern of four beats against three.
The effect of ristirytmit can be to create a feeling of syncopation, anticipation, or a shifting of
