Rinnakkaisliitäntästandardi, often referred to as a parallel interface standard, is a method of transmitting data where multiple bits of information are sent simultaneously over separate wires or channels. This contrasts with serial transmission, where data bits are sent one after another over a single channel. The primary advantage of a parallel interface is its potential for higher data transfer rates due to the ability to send more data in the same amount of time.

Common examples of parallel interface standards include Centronics for printers and the older IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) standard for hard drives. These interfaces typically use a wider connector with numerous pins, each dedicated to carrying a specific bit of data or a control signal. While offering speed advantages, parallel interfaces can suffer from issues like crosstalk between wires and require more complex cabling. The physical distance over which data can be reliably transmitted is also generally shorter compared to serial interfaces. As technology has advanced, many applications have shifted to serial interfaces like USB and SATA, which have overcome previous speed limitations and offer greater flexibility and simplicity in cabling.
